> "Make fists with both hands and extend the thumbs straight. Place the thumbs on the temples and find the niche where the thumbs just fit."

IT'S NOT 100% CLEAR WHERE THIS "NICHE" IS.

The Niche:
It's a slight depression between the eye socket and the ear in the temple area. On me, it is located about at the height of my eyebrow, 1/3 of the way between the end of my eyebrow towards the top of my ear. If you trace your finger from your eyebrow to your ear, your finger should dip immediately - that's the spot. A good feedback way to tell is when you start the second part, and you feel a pulse under your thumb.

> "Lock the back molars together and keep the lips closed. Vibrate the jaw muscles by alternating the pressure on the molars." WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY "ALTERNATING THE PRESSURE"? ALTERNATING UP AND DOWN? LEFT TO RIGHT? FRONT TO BACk?

First, a Disclaimer:
I had a friend who did this very hard, and knocked out a crown on his teeth, so I'd very very careful and gentle when putting pressure on the molars (and that goes for the thumb pressure on the temples too!).

The way I found this to work is to gently lock the rear molars. Then using the muscles of the back jaw, gently increase and then release the pressure on your mandibles. It's neither up+down, side-side, nor front-back – it's not a grinding action at all. It's just pressure, then release. You'll know you got it right when your thumbs are on your temples (not too hard, remember), you should feel a pulse under the pad of the thumb when you press the molars, and you should feel it release when you release the pressure.

Again, with both of these activities, I would impress a gentle, non-fanatical or obsessive action, as this is exactly what most addictive people will tend to slip into - which I know from personal and external experience. Take this one very delicately and lovingly for best results.

Best of luck!
One day at a Time!

Truly Yours,
Fateh Singh

Sat Nam:
Recently, in a class, a student brought up a question regarding "addiction to negativity." I am trying to get a sense of what this means.

From what I understand, a person can develop a chemical dependency on, say, anger or self-criticism, because those emotions are producing a much-needed shot of adrenaline?

I would love to find out what goes on biochemically when a person berates himself, or constantly self-sabotages himself, etc.

My former husband used to comment on how 'peaceful' he felt after a raging temper tantrum. Was he feeding an addiction?  Or what about the person who feels calm after he swears?

What´s the chemical that one would be addicted to?

I've often head that a person gets a 'pay-off' from a negative emotion, but I've never understood exactly what that meant. I never understood how anyone could 'benefit' from self-hatred.
Obviously, I want to help this student. Are there perhaps
books or websites I could steer her to? In the meantime I will work  hard to educate myself on this topic.  Thanks in advance and blessings.

In Gratitude--
Adi Shakti

Sat Nam Abner,One of the things about Dr. Shanahoff-Khalsa's book is that there aren't pictures for the meditations, only verbal descriptions, which can be a challenge. But the meditation is well represented there: the "niche" is simply your temples (where some people rub to make a headache go away); "alternating the pressure" means to rhythmically press the molars together (without letting them separate) in the typical chewing motion to the syllables of the mantra. You should be able to feel the muscles around the temples move under your thumbs if you are pressing the teeth correctly (and this will help you locate the temples, as well). This meditation is called "Medical Meditation for Habituation" in Guru Rattana's book "Relax and Renew".Good Luck,-Baba Singh

Sat Nam,
Sounds like this has been covered pretty well......
but this may help

This is from either the out-of-print "Survival Manual" or the, also,
out-of-print "Kundalini Yoga for Specific Applications", too tired to check.

Sat Nam Baljinder,
In fact, the Siri Singh Sahib, Yogi Bhajan, gave us the Adi Shakti
Mantra back in the seventies, which contains Prithan Bhagauti as one of
four female aspects, in particular she represents the elder matriarch,
blessing us with the wisdom of the ages. I chanted this mantra silently
out my crown chakra three times each evening to call upon the female
power when I was pregnant so I would be a good mother. When my child was
born in 1977, the Siri Singh Sahib gave her the name Adi Shakti Kaur,
for in calling on the primal power, I gave birth to that consciousness.

The mantra is:

Adi Shakti Adi Shakti Adi Shakti Namo Namo
Sarb Shakti Sarb Shakti Sarb Shakti Namo Namo
Pritham Bhagauti Pritham Bhagauti Pritham Bhagauti Namo Namo
Kundalini, Mata Shakti, Mata Shakti Namo Namo

Guru Gobind Singh wrote the first part of Ardas where we call upon these
spiritual entities. He calls upon Pritham Bhagauti first because women
gave birth to the Gurus. The Tenth Master bowed with great
consciousness and humility before that vast primal female power, from
which he himself came onto this planet in fulfillment of God's Will.

Loving Blessings,
SS Guru Prem Kaur Khalsa

I just wanted to put my 2 cents worth in, something my mother says I've been doing since the first words came out of my mouth.

I am a gay man, openly gay, and have been for about 23 years, before that having suppressed it due to the Baptist environment I grew up in's stance on the subject, but I did come out at 16 and basically said screw the church because what was important to me was my relationship with god, not anyone elses idea of what my relationship with god should be. It always seemed like too personal a journey to leave up to someone else, to me anyway, even at 16.

When I started practicing ashtanga yoga at almost 30 in 2000 I noticed it was blatantly absent from discussion and when I attended any events with other ashtangis or studied with Pattabhi Jois, it was never discussed and someone mentioned to me it was because of the overly Indian influence in the system, and in India it is frowned upon, but the same person said does it matter what they think, what do you think? Again, right back to where I stood already with my original church.

THen I began practicing Anusara, same thing, old Indian ideas but a much more welcoming environment due to the Tantric background of that system and they would discuss it and it came to the point of it only really matters what you think, what you believe, not what John Friend or anyone else believes. Duh!

So, I was practicing kundalini sporadically the whole time, not delving deeply into its teaching, just once a week practice. Then this past 2 years as I've gotten deeper into in and mostly practicing sets laid out by Yogi Bhajan rather than hatha yoga (lately anyway) and feeling better and better, and attending my first White Tantric Yoga and buying more books and reading more of his teachings and ideas of things I began to wonder. And then came across this discussion.

I'm currently reading The Mind by Yogi Bhajan and it occurs to me that he is teaching all of us to be our own expressions of the divine. He initially didn't even want people to become Sikh, just to become teachers and spread the teaching around the country to get everyone more prepared for the oncoming Aquarian age and was flabbergasted when they started wearing turbans and following Sikhism, which I have even found myself diving into its teachings.

So I guess what I'm getting at, after a very lengthy amount of words is that does it matter what the 3HO or other Sikhs or even your neighbor thinks of you? I ask myself these things all the time. Does it matter what so and so thinks, not really. I want to become the biggest, most gracious, wonderful, abundant, powerful and loving expression of god I can, to lead by example and to inspire others to want that inner glow that I am now told I have. And to have those clear bright eyes that I am now told I have, and to be the best individual they can be, no matter the circumstance.

And to do that I am going to get up in the morning and do my meditations and kriyas and breathwork and teach my classes and meet men that I may fall in love with or just befriend or both! And walk down the street with my head held high, even with my unruly beard and hair getting longer by the day and my white shirts on and my kara worn on my wrist, prayer beads, all of it.

I know I'm in touch with the god that lives in my soul and I want that to shine out thru my body and inspire others to want to get in touch with the god thats in them and so on and so on, so I'm not worried what anyone thinks about the fact that I'm a gay man, who may or may not become a baptised Sikh but who for sure is going thru his teacher training to become KRI certified this fall and will be proud to be a gay man teaching kriyas and meditations as laid out by YOgi Bhajan.

Sat Nam to all and have a wonderful day!

Sat Inder Singh

Something else just came to mind. Energy release is not injury! If we have congested emotional pain stored in the fascia, it will come out as we practice yoga. This is part of the healing process. At different times in my life when I overdid BIkram Yoga, The Five Tibetans, Vaganova Ballet or Kundalini Yoga, I was flat on my back, totally wiped out. It was not that the style of yoga that had caused the pain, it was because I didn't work gradually and methodically. I had the physical strength and stamina, but on other levels I couldn't handle it. I blew out my circuits.
With energy release, if you rest, take hot baths, practice self-care, and nurturing, usually the pain will vanish. With a physical injury, (like a broken leg,) the bone and physical area has to heal.

In the movie The Karate Kid, the master has his student paint the fence, every day, before he will teach him any karate. I so appreciate this now. The importance of grounding, patience, respect, etc...

What a marvelous question!

Unfortunately (or not, perhaps), there are no guidelines that I know of.
Shakti Parwha Kaur used to try to monitor the music and chanting styles for
the morning meditations, but I believe she finally gave up in an act of
surrender to the way things are.

In the technology of Gurmukhi, the mantras are written to have specific
pronunciations and timings. A fair estimate of the pronunciation can be made
with transliterations if someone does not read Gurmukhi, but I think it
would be useful to pass it by someone who does read Gurmukhi before
publishing a CD.

Syllables can have either one or two beats, or sometimes even half a beat,
based on the vowel within a particular syllable. Some transliterations try
to take this into account by using "AA" for a 2-beat syllable and "a" for a
one-beat syllable, but the transliteration styles vary quite a bit with
this.

Generally the accent of a syllable lands on the first long syllable, but
there are some exceptions when certain consonants are used. Still it's a
pretty good rule of thumb.

For me,one thing that musicians often do that throws of the feeling of the
Naad is when a single syllable is sung over multiple notes. Many of our
best musicians and ragis do this, though, and sometimes it is to conform to a
particular raga or traditional style of music.

Remembering simplicity is important. Sometimes the music is so complicated,
that it makes it hard for some people to follow and reproduce it. It's
always important to remember that this is not performance music, but
singing/chanting music.

Anyway, I so appreciate that you and your comrades are sensitive to the
issue. Sadhana and chant music is clearly different from other music. Most
musicians seem to me to emphasize the "musicality", or the beauty of the
piece, more than the effect that it has through the power of Naad. Sometimes
the power of the Naad comes out most clearly when little music is used at
all (check out the nearly monotone approach of Livtar Singh's sadhana CD,
probably the best sadhana CD for Naad that's out there, in my opinion).

Blessings,
Sham Rang Singh

Sat Nam all,
A question came up yesterday morning at our Albuquerque community Sadhana:

What and where are the guidelines for composing our own musical renditions
of the Aquarian Mantras? Respecting the power and precision of the Naad,
we want to be sure we don't lose the 'magic' in the name of catchy tunes
and phrasing.

Thanks for any and all responses.

Sat Nam Sumpuran Kaur and Sham Rang,
I, too, really appreciate Livtar's Sadhana and also Siri Ved Kaur's,
which is Kirtan based in the Sikh tradition which can get pretty raga
like. Not enough can be said about the power of one note, or
vibration.... and then, as is the esthetic in Raga tradition, there is a
building on that one note (or natural) such that there is some,
hopefully skillful, artistic progression and then a return to that one
note. Warren Senders adequately and humorously describes this art form
in this short listen... http://www.gongsongs.com/Warren.Senders_excerpt.mp3

That said "That which is a special dhwani, is bedecked with swara
(notes) and varna and is colorful or delightful to the minds of the
people, is said to be ra-ga" - Matanga in the Brihaddeshi.

What is delightful to the minds of people can vary so very, very much.
I'll leave it for others to fill in the blanks. I will say there are
_only a couple_ of a Sadhanas that are a lot of work, for me, to sit
through. I'm pretty tough and try to make the best of things. One thing
I like about the Sadhanas mentioned above is that they maintain one
"theme" throughout that is more than just a "feeling". I'm going to fall
short if I try to find words, but lets say there is a tradition that
they can fall back on.

Good luck Sumpuran, in finding that special Chord that resonates with
the Soul!

Sat Nam,

The Rainbow Sangat yahoo group was formed after a historic and joyful
meeting of Lesbian/Gay/Bisexual/Transgender people at last year's
Summer Solstice. The intention in forming this group was not to
separate us from other Kundalini Yogi's, but rather to give us a
place where we could connect and share our experiences, to help us
interpret Yogi Bhajan's teachings and incorporate them into our lives.

Anyone may join by sending an email to rainbowsangat-

Hi Abner,
I am practicing this meditation for habituation or the medical meditation.
The 'points' David mentions are very intuitive. They are level with the eyes and about an inch around the sides of the head from the eyes, actually this is a very sensitive area, and just by pressing lightly in that area you will definately find the 'hot spot'.
As for your second question, you basically grind the teeth from side to side. It is like when you have a new filling and the Dentist ask's you to bite up and down and SIDE TO SIDE. It is this side to side motion of the jaw and teeth, you dont need to do it hard, just in a natural way. While doing this, as you say you keep the mouth closed, and looking into the 'third eye' with eyes closed, silently chant SA TA NA MA. So grind to one side SA, then to the other TA, then back with NA, then to the other side with MA and so on.
Hope this helps,
With Blessings,
Paul/Sukhnivas

Dear KY group,
Three questions with this mudra, obviously the mantra is Mmmmaaaaaa, Mmmmaaaaa etc. not ending with Long Ma? Is that right?
Secondly is the mantra chanted silently or out loud?
And thirdly is 31 minuites the maximun time?
Thanking you in advance,
Paul/Sukhnivas

Go within connect to the universal Mother

Perhaps the rarest of mudras in tatva yoga this is a complete body mudra

This is the mudra that connects to the universal mother.

Yogi Bhajan tracked the yogi that knew this meditation for three months in the Himalayas and then waited in Gurupranam (a yoga posture) outside his home for two days to get it.

Start Time 16 minutes.

Sit with the right foot flat on the floor knee to chest.

The right elbow rests on the knee with the hand cupping the ear. The fingers are straight back.

The left leg is flat on the ground with the toes on the Achilles tendon of the right foot.

Left hand goes behind the hips.

As a number of people have asked me for the URL for the Rainbow Sangat I have decided to look up the original invitation from the group's Moderator and reply to the post so that people interested in the group can access it. The URL for the Rainbow Sangat is:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/rainbowsangat/join

As one member recently noted, she felt sad when the the Rainbow Sangat had formed because she was hoping that these discussions could take place in the greater sangat. It would be my hope as well that we could continue to have a dialogue in this medium.

One fear that some have expressed has been that the Rainbow Sangat would create a separation from the rest of the community. What I have heard from various people in the Rainbow Sangat is that nobody wants to see that happen. It deserves mentioning that while it may seem from my previous post that I am coming from an integrated place, I owe some of that integration to many, many people in the larger sangat who have extended so much love, acceptance, nurturing and support to me in all aspects of who am of which my sexual orientation is just one small part. The last thing I would ever want to do is to separate from them. My hope is that the existence of the Rainbow Sangat can serve not to separate us but to make us even more cohesive as a community.

In the past 50 years the movement for glbt rights has been a movement of separation, agitation, and antagonization. There was a time and place for this to take place and it was appropriate in order for us to do the work we needed to do which has catapulted us into the place where we are today. When I came out in 1984 I didn't know that other people like me existed. Today the 9 year old child that I helped raise from my last relationship is getting up in front of her school and making speeches in support of Gay Marriage and she tells me that she felt completely supported in doing so. This seems like a miracle that so much could have changed in 25 short years.

The paradigm of separation, agitation and antagonization is an old paradigm that may no longer serve us in this context. My hope is that we can begin to operate from a new paradigm of mutual honor and respect, vibrating the cosmos, recognizing the other in ourselves, understanding with compassion, finding a way through our blocks, starting now to release the pressure (Please note that I am referencing Yogi Bhajan's Sutras for the Aquarian Age here). In our silence we have unanswered questions, we become paranoid and fearful, we begin to project these fears on to one another and begin throwing around painful accusations that can only serve to create misunderstandings that divide and separate us. My hope is that the time has come for this community to begin to break this silence and start searching for answers so that we can be more joined than ever before. I invite people in this forum to continue to ask questions on this subject and continue to post responses and engage in discourse.

In Loving Service,
Sunderta
